In commercial or industrial boiler installations, boilers are rated based on their square feet of heating surface. Packaged boilers today are commonly rated on the basis that 5 sq. ft. of heating surface will produce 1 boiler horsepower, or 33, 500 btu of useful heat, and some claim even less surface required per BHP.
